Has anyone heard of an internal 3G/hsdpa upgrade being made to early p1610 models? I have heard this being performed on OQO model 2, and was wondering if a similar mod would be possible for the p1610.

the 1610 has a different configuration for the wan than the OQO. THe OQO has a wan module on a mini-pcie card in the unit. the wan module of the p1610 is integrated into the daughter board that also houses the sd card reader and USB ports. If you look under the battery you will see the slot where the sim card goes, which is blocked by foam since you do not have a wan module. If you could acquire an IO board that has the HSDPA module integrated you could just swap the whole thing out. On the other hand if you dont mind losing your wlan you can try swapping in a mini-pcie wan card but there have been reports that it is unsuccessful as the mini-pcie slot may not have the USB signals that the wan card uses. see this thread;

http://www.leog.net/fujp_forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12052

one last option would be to replace the USB bluetooth module with a USB mini pcie card of your choice but that is not a plug and play option and requires soldering.

I do not recall seeing another slot for the UMTS card when i disassembled my unit, the only removable slot was the MiniPCIe.

Do you have any photos?

BTW, I have the latest BIOS as recommended in the other thread, but I was still unable to get my Sprint EX720 to function in my P1610

I opened up my unit the other day and it looks like there IS another mini-pcie slot on the motherboard BUT, units that do not ship with the WAN do not have the slot or associated components soldered to the board. I didn't take any pictures but here is a shot from the service manual.

the 3g models are only available in fujitsu asia / australia and uk. I think the p1620 commercialized in US will include the 3g hsdpa chip port

The P1610 is available with 3G module in Europe indeed, but not the P1620 ;)

I just completely opened my P1620 as being an electronics engineer it's something I need to do at least once with every machine I have

Besides the fun part, I also intended to look if I could find some room and a spare USB port to fit a little GPS module inside. That post mentioning the "spare" miniPCIe port comforted me about the possibility.

Indeed, there's also a footprint on the board for a 2nd miniPCIe connector, and associated physical space for the card. The PCIe port only has USB wired. The good news is that for a machine of that size the volume available inside is amazing, and next to that large space there are also lots of little places where things could be added.

So I went on trying to hook something to that USB port. I soldered 2 wires to the data lines on the miniPCIe footprint and placed bridges on the 2 missing component locations - most likely caps are supposed to go there but not knowing the value I decided to try direct connection. I found myself a ground and some +5V on the board.

I tried hooking a card reader and an USB to RS232 interface to that new port and it worked perfectly well

So now I just need to wait a couple more days until I receive my GPS module, and there it will go.

To go back to the thread, I'm pretty sure that hack could be used to add 3G. There are relatively small 3G USB sticks, after removing the case and USB connector it should most likely fit in the available space (the advantage of not having the miniPCIe connector fitted on the board means one can easily get 2cm more length, about 60x30mm overall). For multiple hacks, there seems to be another unused footprint on the daughter board (where the 3G module would be fitted?), that most likely has a 2nd unused USB port.

I actually might try that too, I've seen a cheap 2nd hand 3G stick on auction that looks good size-wise. I might need to change my intended GPS to another smaller one though if I do. But I know of a tiny 16x16x6mm one...

Is the connection at USB 2.0 speeds? Would be a great way to add internal storage via a USB thumbdrive.

With all the extra space you would think there coul've been a regular so-dimm slot.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express_Mini_Card

Mini PCI Express specifies an USB 2.0 interface, so yes it should. Chipsets now don't have USB1.1 controllers anymore anyway.
And I agree with that SO-DIMM thing...

My GPS is now in, but it seems that module has pretty poor sensitivity. I tried connecting it externally and it didn't help, so it doesn't seem to be related to the internal positioning and possible interference.
I might go with 3G instead then, $50 2nd hand adapter is on its way.

Yeah, only the bottom cover is all metal. The Keyboard is lined with foil underneath, so that's probably not helping.

BTW, can you shhow pics of where you soldered your +5VDC to?

The keyboard isn't doing much, even taking the GPS out and putting it on a normal USB port with a 1.5m cable doesn't change a thing.

Here's a shot of where I took the +5V:

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b105/Kilrah/PICT4276.jpg

I had picked it from one of the other ports initially, but then changed as this would have eaten a bit of the 500mA limit on the other port. I didn't like that as I often use external 2.5" HDDs and feared that port wouldn't be able to power it anymore) the GPS uses about 100mA. The current location should solve that.

OK, some news.
I just received my USB 3G modem, a Huawei E169.

As my GPS module was really useless (Never ever got a fix with it since it's in!), I threw it out and reused the connections for the 3G module. Removed case and USB connector, used some tape to hold the SIM in place as it would normally be held there by the case, some more to insulate the side that will be pressed against the mainboard.

All in place, antenna goes under the plastic case:

And there we are. The thing is a tad too thick and will lift the keyboard about 0.5mm where it's installed. It doesn't seem like it will annoy me.
Everything works fine for now. The stick also has a microSD card reader, which would have been a nice tool to expand storage with a 16GB card... if it hadn't turned out to be USB1.1 speed only (800kB/s). I did put an unused 2GB card in there, never know, might be handy for important file backup storage. It does support SDHC.

It's nice to know that all that's needed is to remove a single screw, and lift the keyboard to get access to all that's needed for the mod. So pretty quick and easy.

There's still enough space for another kind of GPS module I have next to the 3G adapter, I might end putting it there if I can find a 2nd USB port.
