Can't get the graphics driver to recognize the screen, been reading here:
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=59482
and here:
http://forums.entechtaiwan.net/viewtopic.php?t=3363

where they are talking about tweaking intels embedded drivers, which is mostly used for developers and the like, and i can't really understand what they are doing, so I thought maybe some of you have done it already or are having the same kind of problem?

Also tried various tweaking tools like Powerstrip, Refreshlock and Reforce but they have no effect of the intel drivers.

Just resolved the problem, found out you have to go into safe-mode( by pressing F8 on startup), and install the intel embedded graphics driver, which is for developers and the like, from here:
http://www.intel.com/design/intarch/swsup/graphics_drivers.htm

then it can detect the correct resolution.

Glad to help you out^^

I really find it disgraceful and pathetic though that intel is too lazy to fix a seemingly simple problem like this which i can imagine a lot of people are having. especially when it seems like cards from ATI and Nvidia don't have these issues <end rant> ^^

I tired this method on my W5 and it does NOT work. The driver does not install in normal or safe mode. It aborts and tells you it didn't install.

Did you uninstall the old driver? I think i did that when i tried it. and make sure to install it with the 'setup.exe in the utilities folder.

I think there is a better way to do it, but i think what i did was when you intall the new drivers there is an option to 'uninstall'.

Also check the Add/remove programs feature in the control panel, just searched and apparently intels drivers should be there.

another way is to go to the device manager and unistall there, but that might not clean out everything.

you might also wanna try this tool: http://drivercleaner.net/professional.php to get rid of the driver.

Another thing: Make sure the chipset of the W5 is listed when you download the embedded drivers.

the ones i linked to supports these:
The Intel® Embedded Graphics Drivers, designed for the Intel® 815/815E, Intel® 845GV, Intel® 852GM, Intel® 852GME, Intel® 855GME, Intel® 915GV, Intel® 915GM, Intel® 945G and Intel® 945GM chipsets,

I'm having problems with the above setup, seems that if you mess around with the settings for the screens especially in the bios, its easy for problems to arise.

What happened is that now i can't put my screen to 1400x900 anymore, and it will only allows me to go to 1280x768. So i was wondering if anybody know any small program to force it to go there

Found one way you can use to get the W2 to recognize 1440x900 again, is to run a game that supports it (i used GTA:San andreas), and if you are lucky it appears again.

Now mine doesn't work again, after I restarted and unsuccesfully tried to install the newest drivers (6.1 - luckily i got a new BenQ (FPVW93) monitor, which scales much better as opposed to the last Samsung (940BW) i had.
Just a heads up for you guys looking get a widescreen, for your w2, is this issue fixed on the new intel chipsets btw?

Thinking of upgrading, anybody know if the graphicschipset in the W5 supports widescreen resolutions?

Chipsets support it - the BIOS does not.

Not sure it has anything to do with the bios, just a question of intel's driver sucking.

Did you try to intall the embedded drivers on the W5?

That same Intel chipset supported external widescreen on two other laptops I have used. And it is used in MANY laptops which are natively widescren. So the lack of widescreen resolutions is due to something Panny has done in the BIOS or somwhere else - its not the fault of the chipset.

That "embedded drivers" thing did not work at all. I have since sold the W5K anyway, and am now using a Y5M.

Just found this guide at Intel for hacking registry keys and driver files, haven't tried it yet though.

Anybody know if the 6 and 7 series has the same problems with running widescreen resolutions?

Check out this discussion as well, might be a bit easier to grasp.

Finally got it working! just installed the new 8.0 embedded drivers, and it works perfectly! even auto detects the resolution and everything.

FinnMan>Actually you don't need to install them in safe-mode and here is the path to install from:

C:\IEGD_8_0\plugins\com.intel.iegd.drivers_8.0.0\Windows\IEGD_8_0_Windows\Utilities

In case anybody was having problems.

Another thing to note, is that it allows you to run very high resolutions, supposedly not supported by the older intel chipsets. For instance I am running 1920x1200 - even though the specification for my W2 says it only supports 1600x1200. Would be interesting to see how high it could potentially go.
