| If you can read Japanese, there's lots of info on the IBM Japan site: http://www-6.ibm.com/jp/pc/campaign/annc031203/. I guess this means it's coming to the US as well. Could be a nice machine - looks almost the same size as my old Thinkpad 240, but with a 12.1" screen. |

Sorry about the double posting, the second post contains the Japanese url.
Anyway, I can read the pictures on the japanese site. :) It definitely looks smaller, more in the sub notebook category. I would guess that the x40 will be similar in size to the 240, perhaps a 10 inch vs the X31's 13 inch screen? In fact, I wouldn't doubt the 240 and X40 chasis to be quite similar. The fact that IBM will build a smaller subnotebook is a bit mysterious to me, considering they likely had the technology to put the current Centrino system in a smaller package.
I did a currency conversion yen to US$, and found the X40 costs around 1750 there.
I've been putting off the purchase of a laptop to replace my malfunctioning Omnibook 500 for quite some time, I'm not quite at he point of desperation, but getting close by the day. The P series is very attractive to me, but I like the old-style square screen. I need linux for my applications, and a notebook with the horsepower to run XPP in vmware could be very useful.
I've got student loans, so I'm pretty poor. I've been considering a refurb X30, refurb X31 from dealers on ebay. Hopefully the new product line will push out those older models at reduced prices and more refurb models will begin to surface. |

Oops, didn't bother to read your second post - just assumed it was an accidental repost.

No, it's definitely a 12.1" screen (says so on the IBM US site http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-53588). The X31 also has a 12.1" screen, and they are both XGA (1024x768).

Here are the specs of the 240 versus the X40: 240: 260x202x26.6mm, 1.35kg X40: 268x211x20.6-26.9mm, 1.23-1.24kg
So they are quite similar in size, even though the X40 has a 12.1" screen and the 240 has a 10.4" screen. There is quite a large bezel on the 240, whereas the screen on the X40 almost fills the whole lid.

So I replaced my 240 with a P-2040. I prefer the P's screen, but the Fujitsu keyboard isn't a patch on the IBM keyboard. I don't use the DVD much, as I normally use the bay battery. So the X40 is quite appealing to me. However, the IBM website says that battery life is only 3.5hrs, which could be a show-stopper considering the 8-9hrs that I get out of my P with Linux. |

| No internal optical and a small battery... frankly, I'm not impressed. |

it's all relative.. almost a pound lighter than my x22 (3.6 vs 2.7) and a much better processor running at 25% more mhz.
what i would like to see from ibm is an x32 (basically an x31) with an upgrade from the radeon 16meg to a radeon 9000 64meg and usb2.0.
they are very thin and have a very comfortable wrist rest area. |
